A barnacle gosling doesn’t ask Why?
as it plunges four hundred feet
from the safety of its nest.
The honk of its mother is enough.
Fall or starve, says evolution
without thought or sentiment.

Is there time for philosophy
before gravity has had its say?
A moment of relief?
For us, maybe; for the geese
another tick in a box
before the predators arrive.
