Careful what you  wish for

It was cold in my easy chair.
Too cold to be easy, in fact.
Seeking warmth, I sank
to my knees before the fireplace.
Packed it with crumpled newspaper,
kindling and well-seasoned logs.
Didn’t want a failure,
filling the room with smoke
and then fizzling out.
It burst satisfyingly into life.
Job done. Time for a cup of tea.
Returned from the kitchen to find
living room carpet ablaze,
flames dancing a jig on my easy chair.

  1. I like the repetitions and puns on ‘easy’. I wonder if ‘It went off like a bomb’ and ‘disaster!’ are pre-empting the punch line?
