Slug Thugs

Aha! I found day 30….here goes…

Slug Thugs

They slime over black curly kale,
slither over lollo rosso leaves,
suck their way over sprouting mange tout,
completely ignoring the skin slicing egg shells,
the small pot of drowning ale,
the copper wall of death,
the blue pellets from hell.
And all in the bat-black night
when the pecking birds are wrapped
in laurel leaves dreaming of suet,
sunflower seeds and moist cake crumbs.

An unfortunate way with words

An unfortunate way with words

Flying through the air
like arrows
straight towards
my prey,
so innocent and trusting.
Instantly regret
letting them loose.
Would recall them
if I could,
stuff them back
into my dustbin
of a mouth,
slam down the lid.
But can only
watch them strike home,
her face crumpling,
pierced to the heart.

Out on the deep
a pigeon circles our yacht, wearily.
Crash lands onto our masthead,
keeps its grip, bobbing about up there
as the boat rises and falls on the swell.
Flutters down to the deck
after we produce a saucer of bread and milk.
We notice the bird is ringed and imagine
the mounting concern of its trainer.
A hunched companion for an hour or two,
when we come within sight of land
the pigeon perks up.
Rejuvenated, takes to the sky again
and with a dip of its wings
heads for home.
