Courting
I held a torch.
He tinkered
with the unfixable
jacking up an old wreck
in a breaker’s yard.
This is how we went courting, a term
long past its sell-by-date.
Helpmeet’s another.
Helpmeet’s another
long past its sell-by-date.
This is how we went courting a term
in a breaker’s yard,
jacking up an old wreck
with the unfixable.
He tinkered.
I held a torch.
Clever – you are forgiven the title!
Of course, “Assistant” could have well been the title of this poem.
I love it and the form but I have no idea what Helpmeet is!
in the second stanza my mind started wandering a little further – and a more mature courtship – and innuendo – so it might be an interesting exercise to have a look at an old poem and write it backwards and see what happens – I think I’ll do that one day
