I wrote this on Sunday at a workshop and worked on it today.

Film Buff

I love all those films that begin with a panorama,
like the funeral procession in Dr Zhivago snaking
over the Russian steppes with the Urals as backdrop,
or the spaceship in 2001, a Space Odyssey,
as it approaches a space station in earth orbit
to the accompaniment of the Blue Danube waltz.
My ideal would be a green savannah viewed
from a hilltop. There’d be no people for five minutes,
though there might be a dog or horse wandering around.
The camera mustn’t zoom in or pan across the scene,
just watch and wait. I’d be watching as well,
standing on the hill next to the cameraman, staring
out across the wide open spaces. We’d chat
about the weather and how the Reds were robbed
the previous night. I’d ask where he comes from as we wait
for the main character to appear over the horizon,
clothes tattered, dying of thirst, frozen to the marrow
having been lowered from a helicopter out of sight.
The cameraman would zoom in on the hero and I’d run
as fast as I could to greet my favourite Facebook friend.

  1. I like the structure but I’m puzzled about the Facebook reference. My favourite opening is in Witness with the Amish funeral in the waving corn fields!

  2. I agree with Martin and Penny re Facebook reference. But the poem had me gripped… I especially like the way it turns from the landscape to the chat between two people waiting for something to happen… great stuff!
