It’s a First World Problem

but we must wrestle
with the issue of how
to name our streets
without upsetting people.

A homosexual couple
in Borough Green, Kent,
felt oppressed each time they
walked down Bangays Way.
An extra “g” in the middle
might have kept them happy.

In nearby Sevenoaks,
the council is doing away with
names such as Gasworks Road
and Coalpit Lane because
they are “aesthetically unsuitable.”
It would rather pretend
it didn’t have a gasworks,
or any need for fossil fuel.

I know Sevenoaks and it might
be fitting to name the streets
Bumptious Management Consultant Avenue
and
Fat, Smug Banker with an Audi Close.
