it is only a letter, printed on green paper.
From the hospital.Asking that you attend
a certain clinic on a certain date
to undergo a certain test.
It outs you in a quandary:
does it mean more than it appears to mean,
some sinister message underlying
the bland official words?
Should you now apply yourself to end-of-life
affairs, a living will , your funeral plan
– but you don’t have one. (Yet) -Should you
refuse certain/ uncertain treatments
which may/ may not be necessary
and in any case aren’t you jumping the gun?
It’s only a letter. With a plain request.
Why, you wonder, is the paper green?

perhaps humans are just naturally curious/suspicious – I like the repetition and the way it is written to “you” instead of “I”
Great! You describe just how minds work when presented with such a letter – all that ‘blurb’ rattling around up there, even to wondering why the paper is green. And it all happens in seconds. And you’ve captured how it is.
Not entirely sure about ‘it OUTS you in a quandry’ though.
Oh dear Sarah, that’s a typo (I’m very good at these!) it should be ‘puts’!!
Thank you both, Sarah D and Sarah L, for commenting.
