The silver donkey
Small, with outsize head and ears,
balanced on dainty hooves, always
standing on my mother’s dressing table.
“It’s not a toy. It’s valuable, you know,”
she would say, gently removing it
from my hands, then those of my children,
putting it back in position.
Nowadays I gently remove it
from the hands of my grandchildren,
replacing it where it stands on my desk.
Lovely image of the donkey – dainty hooves. I like the double inheritance of the donkey and the ‘gently removing’.
Pedant alert… can you put something back to where it’s already standing? (replacing it where it stands)
Mmm… to be on the safe side I’ll change it to; “returning it to its place on my desk.”
I love the idea of the donkey passing through the generations – something that has stability in a changing world – beautiful.
