When the music stops

I hear music infiltrating
the darkness of my room.
Slip out of bed,
open the window.
Lilting across the fields
on the still night air,
a cheerful sound,
some celebration at the
village hall or cricket club.

I wake later to rattling
from the open window.
No longer any music
and a wind has got up.
Struggle out of bed,
close the window.
This time it’s difficult
to drop off to sleep,
listening to that wind.

  1. I like the ‘village hall or cricket club’ which tells us so much about the location. Ahem. Not sure you need first two lines of St 1. and ‘Struggle out of bed / close the window’ in St.2.
